I have a computer that is setup for AOL DSL which is on my fathers PC. So I went and bought a DSL modem also. So that leads to 2.
When I installed my modem (USB connect) I did EXACTLY what the setup instructions said to do. Now, When I restart after installation the tray icon at the bottom, which shows the status of my DSL modem. It says "Modem not connected to network"?! i am very confused please help
Thanks..........

Goto AOL Broadband and read the tips, faqs, etc. on connecting. It would have been easier if you got an ethernet connected DSL modem. With Linksys or other supported router you could share the connection.

Are you trying to connect another modem to the same DSL line? If so that won't work - what you need is a broadband router.

Just disconnect the other DSL modem.
Only 1 connected at a time.

You may still have trouble connecting if the
MAC address is used to verify your ID.

Hold on now.
You have a DSL modem on a DSL line. The single DSL modem is all you need.

Lets get simple. You have your dad's PC connected to the DSL modem which goes to the phone jack in the wall. It works.

Now, you want to share the DSL line too. You want to get online when your dad is online. Do not buy another DSL modem.

There are three things you can do if your original DSL modem has an ethernet connection (not USB - though some have both). If you only have a USB modem, then 3 is your option.

1) Buy a switch. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the switch. Connect the other PCs to the switch.

2) Buy a router. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the router. You can use this solution if you have a PPPoE (or PPPoA) connection. This kind of connection means you have to log in to connect, which the router can be configured to do automatically for you. The router has a switch in it, so use that to connect the other computers to it.

3)(not ideal)On your father's PC use the Windows Internet Connection sharing program. Use the Windows help to configure it. You have to have your father's PC on for you to get to the Internet though.
