Hi,
I thought I used to be good at setting up Windows File-Sharing but I guess I'm wrong, because I have a bit of a problem.
I just reinstalled Windows XP yesterday and set up my shares. However, I need to get some files of my friend's computer and onto mine. I can't access his computer, and he can't access mine. His computer was recently set up about a few weeks ago, and I think he has the same problem as I am. All the other computers on the network can see ours, but can't access any of the shares. My friend and I can't access each other. However, we both can access the other computers that can't access us. We are also all on the same workgroup.
I have simple file-sharing turned off on all the machines.
All the machines have file-sharing and security permissions set up as defined in 'Level 4' of the following MS support article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040

The computers aside from mine and my friend's follow this setup exactly, and have no problems. We are using the same thing and are having problems. I have run the networking wizard on both of ours and still experience problems. Windows Firewall is turned off. There is no antivirus software that can be messing with this setup.

Am I missing something?

A quick temporary solution. Use a common computer that you both can share and store the files to be transfered on it.

The computers that can be accessed by us are wireless b, and a weak signal at that. I also need other computers on the network to be able to access my main share for some applications that I need to install asap.

you need to create an account on each others machines with your username and password matching your own one.

I know it's not that because the computers we can access have different user accounts and the only common account would be the admin account, but that has a different password for each machine. Anyhow, I fixed problem. I turned back on Simple-File sharing, ran the networking wizard, and restarted. I turned back off simple-filesharing, set up my shares, and ensured the Guest account was active. Now it works even though everything LOOKED to be set up the same way; Anyone that tries to access my computer (and his for that matter) are asked to put in a username/password in which case is the 'Guest' account for that particular computer, but his password and mine for our guest accounts are different. Works nonetheless. Problem solved.
