Hi, I'm new here and to the whole home networking deal. I am a tech guru and have my fair share of technical experience, just not in networking.I am going to make a home file sharing and possibly printer sharing in my home. I have a total of 3 computers now and may be going to 5 or more. I am going to use a switch in my network and Cat6 cable. I need 2 lengths of 25 foot cable and 1 length of 100 foot cable. I'm getting a 8 port switch for further expansion. I'd like to know if these products will work together and if it's all i need. Here is the link: https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.asp?ID=9088068

Thanks,
Dylan

Yeah!!

Your link doesn't work because it requires a logon.

Your plan doesn't include internet access but otherwise a switch and cables will take care of the hardware aspect of networking.

Imagine the power of knowing how to internet search

Not unless you want all PCs on your network to access the internet.

Don't post if you ate razor blades for breakfast!

What you're describing is a basic star topology. Which is to say, multiple clients plugged into a central switch. It looks as follows:

switch >> clients

If they're all addressed within the same subnet, they'll communicate and you will have a LAN.

If you want internet access, get a SOHO router and plug the switch into it and that will provid internet access to all clients on the LAN. That would look as follows:

internet >> router >> switch >> clients

Sorry, I have another question. If I got a server in the future could i hook it to the switch will it work as a server or not. I guess I would hook it to the RJ-45 jack on the server? thanks much,

Dylan

Yes, you would plug the Network Interface on the server into the switch. You would then need to give the server an IP in the same subnet as the rest of your LAN in order for it to communicate. NOTE: being as how this is a server, do not use DHCP to assign IP information. For servers and network printers one should always statically assign.

I'm not sure what to say at this point. Google "online computer dictionary" to get a definition of any/all terms you didn't understand. As for anything else you didn't understand, again, google is your friend.
