Subject: all of a sudden networked comp slowOS: XP pro SP2CPU/Ram: 1GB |
Comment: ok, another question... just got a new front desk computer.. we have all the "shared docs" stored on the OFFICE computer (in the office, duh)... the office computer is win XP pro sp2... with 1gb of ram, 100gb harddisc... and a P4 proc. it was running great.. fast, everytihng working well.. the shared doc folder before was the front desk.. and that computer was starting to just creeeeeep... moving very slow.. it was a 6 year old machine on the front desk.. now we got a new one for the front desk... and moved the shared folders to the office computer (versus the front desk computer, the way it was before) now the office computer is just creeping along... moving super slow.. why is this!!!? i cant figure it out.. the only thing i can think of is that now the shared docs is on that computer.... (the only other computer on the network is a WIFI laptop in the back...) why the slowdown? it was running very fast before (we run peachtree, ect... in the office) work takes forever.. right clicking and getting the preferences and adjusting the screen saver time is ataking forever! whats up!? the CPU usage is at anywhere from 0 to 6% pretty normal... please, any ideas!!!??? thanks a ton! pj

Reply: (edit)I would run a few virus scans first. If clean, I would begin doing network captures with ethereal and look for anything out of the ordinary. What about network utilization? What is your network infrastructure? Hubs, switches, their speeds, where is this computer in that infrastructure, etc. How many people are accessing this server at once? Reply: (edit)when we are having the problems there is NO one accessing the network.. really it is just the two computers.. one in the office, and one on the front desk... they are connected by two network cards, 10/100 ethernet.. connected to a HUB... they communicate fine.. its just that now the office computer is super slow (now that we have moved the shared docs from front desk comp. to office computer?) thats my only idea.. doesnt make any sense to me... both are running win XP pro SP2... they are both DELLS... one is brand new.. with specs above.. and the other office computer is very similar.. 512MB of ram... and 80BG harddrive... it was working just fine before.. now its not why? nothing has changed except we got a NEW computer.. and moved shared docs from front desk to office... thanks pj

Reply: (edit)Moving the data can only slow the computer down if... 1. Running out of disk space. 2. Virus. 3. Data being accessed is corrupted. Start with virus scans. I would think that would be the most likely culprit. Next check available free space on the hard drives. Run chkdsk on the drives of the office computer. Then run defrag. Also, any errors or warnings in the app and syslogs that may pertain to this?
