after RIS GPO not working

I have a home network, a W2K server and 2 Win Pro clients. When I set up the clients from scratch and join them to the domain and run Group Policies to install software onto these clients, such as sp4-update.msi it worked fine. but now I am learning RIS, installing Win 2000 pro via RIS is no problem, and then after the win 2000 pro is installed, none of the Group Policies to install software on these clients works!! Why is this not working, I see the computer account registered in 'Active Directory Users and Computers'! should i have had it install into a workgroup and then add it to the domain myself? this makes no sense! even setting a simple gpo like 'show run on the start menu' does not work! on this client that had its OS installed via RIS. What could be the problem?
