If XP didnt recognize your ethernet card then you have to manually install the driver for your card.

Have you installed any chipset, network card, graphics, audio drivers??????
You have not given any system description or specifications. Is it a brandname system? What make/model motherboard?

I have an IBM desktop, all I did was change the hard drive, touched nothing else; when I put the old hard drive everything is fine, everything works
Does XP SP-2, have anything to do with my problem?
How do I download & install drivers, and from where?
Thank you so much for any help!

Have you tried IBM? You will need to search for drivers for the exact model of your system and download them on whatever other working PC you have. Then either burn to CD or copy to USB stick for transfer & installation on the new operating system.

And as for your question whether it is XP SP2 that is the cause of the problem, in a way yes. XP does not come pre-loaded with all possible hardware drivers.
