If you do not have to integrate your device with your computer, don't. It is simply another device the OS has to manage.

10/100 Ethernet is plently fast. You will not even be reaching the 10Mb barrier.

I am sure there is a speed difference, but I do not think it is the kind that humans can percieve.

Perhaps I should correct my statement above:

"If you do not have to integrate your device with your computer, don't. It is simply another device the OS has to manage."

Do not let Windows manage things it does not have to. Especially Windows 9x.

It is best to segment your network. If your modem is in your computer, that means whatever else (other computers) want to connect to the Internet, they must be connected to your computer. Consequently Windows will have to manage traffic for a whole LAN.

It is far simpler and less error prone to have your modem outside your computer where you can see its lights and more objectively test its connection. Then, adding a router means you can also have a firewall transparent to your OS, automatic login (if your ISP requires it), and easy connectivity among multiple machines.

Windows is not a server, not an embedded OS, and far more error prone than a router's firmware. An external modem uses its own CPU power and is easier to troubleshoot.

The performance of your connection through a router and external modem vs. a PCI modem will be virtually the same.
