Subject: ADSL Router, attaching a hub to itOS: Windows XP HomeCPU/Ram: 2.6GHz, 256 DDR Ram |
Comment: Hi, i have just had broadband installed. I am using a BT Voyager 205 router. It splits the broadband into one usb and one ethernet. Would it be possible to attach a hub to the ethernet port of the router and split the broadband throught the hub. Currently i am using the router also as a home networking device ie. using it to share files betweent the two computers attached to it. Would it be possible to still share files between the computers, including those connected to the hub attached to the router, the extra computers i want to attach to the hub will be running windows 95 and 98, will this be a problem connecting it to 2 windows xp home computers. Can anyone help?? Thanks

Reply: (edit)The Hub should work fine and not interfere with anything. However. To get permissions set correctly and to install the correct protocols on the two older PC's, you may have to run the XP network setup wizard from the XP disk on each of the older Machines. Another helpful place to visit would be www.homenethelp.com They have some great tutorials. Good Luck.

Reply: (edit)what you describe is not a router but a dsl modem. It is designed usually to either use rj45 or usb but not both at the same time. The other issue is you usually only get one ip address which is why everyone puts in a router and does nat so they can have multiple pcs connecting to the internet via the one ip address provided by the ISP. But there was a post recently of someone using a rj45 spitter with dsl and it worked for them. Apparently the isp was providing them with two ip addresses. I am still amazed the splitter worked so you may be able to connect usb and rj45 and have it work.

Reply: (edit)Looks like that unit WILL allow you to connect usb and rj45 and supports two pcs connections. http://www.voyager.bt.com/205/prodinfo.htm You certainly could add a hub to the rj45 You may want to consider assigning a static ip address to the 3rd pc so the two you want on the internet don't get bumped because the dhcp ip assignment was grabbed by the 3rd pc.
