Can anyone please explain to me what is the difference between an ADSL Modem and ADSL Router? If they are suppose to do the same function then why two products?

Thanks

A modem and a router are two different pieces of equipment doing two different jobs. With home equipment they are often both combined into the same box and if there is more than one Ethernet port, a switch as well.

A modem takes the digital signal from the computer and MODulates it for transmission down the telephone line while at the same time receives incoming signals and DEModulates into a digital signal. Hence MODEM. A router takes the signal from the MODEM and applies Network Address Translation among other there things. The Router then feeds the signal to a switch with distributes the signal to different computers in the network.

A MODEM is essential for Internet communication over the telephone lines. Routers and switches are optional extras depending on your requirements.
