I'll try to be brief.
I have a home wired network (fast ethernet) in a 2nd floor office. The setup is:
Cable modem to Linksys 1-port router (BEFSR11)
Linksys router to uplink port(#8) on Linksys 8-port switch
Linksys switch to 2 desktops, 1 laptop, print serverI would like to add wireless access for 3rd desktop on 1st floor and 1 laptop (to roam around the house). How?
Over the weekend, I bought new D-Link 5 Ghz 802.11a wireless access point, D-Link 5 Ghz 802.11a wireless PCI adapter and D-Link 5 Ghz 802.11a wireless PCMCIA card.
I installed access point into available port on Linksys switch and it appeared to recognize 100Mb network. I successfully installed PCI adapter in 3rd desktop, which appeared to work.
I could not access the config menus in the access point (192.168.0.50), even after manually assigning the 3rd desktop an IP in the valid range (192.168.0.10). Assuming that none of the eqmt was defective, why wouldn't this work?
The CD manual for the access point, said that you could attach to router using crossover cable. When I used this cable, no network was recogized, but when I used regular CAT5 cable, network was recognized. Since my router has only 1 port, is this my limitation? Should I have a 4-port router?
Would there be an advantage to get a 4-port wireless router that I use with wireless eqmt _and_ still use wired network?
I really need a How-to on adding wireless to an existing wired network.
Thanks for your time and help.
