I have a home peer to peer network and have 1 computer windows 2000 and 1 windows ME and a 5 port sw and both work fine. I want to add a network printer using a jetdirect and a hp 3100 laserjet printer so the computers can access the printer at all times when on the network. will I have a problem setting this up and what else will I need. I know I will have to give the jetdirct an IP address and install the printer software on all computers as a network printer

Hi Randy,
To install a network printer its very simple, first you must decide which computer on the network you want to place the printer on, lets decide you want to place the printer on the win2k computer all you have to do is install the priner as you would use it normally and then share the printer.
After the printer has been shared all you do is go to the other computer and then find the printer share which would be in (network neigbourhood, computer name for win2k pc, then the shared printer) after this you can right click and say install, it may ask for drivers so make sure you have the drivers disc ready after you have installed the drivers you can use the printer in all applications.
You may also be able to just point to the printer through the application.
The only problem you may come across when placing the printer onm win2k is that the user has to identify to the computer to use the share, so each user must identify to the win2k pc to gain access to the shares and the printer access.
Hope this helps, if you do have any problems please contact me on our forum.

Hi I really want to add a printer to my home peer to peer network that we all can use with out going through a shared computer or printer.I installed a jetdirect 300 and set it up with the hp software and it gave it an ip address and I sent a job to it but printer just does not respond.I also pushed the test button on the jet direct and the printer said test printing but never printed can anyone help.

Randy, It sounds like you have a prob with the printer. Whether or not the printer is connected to anything doesn't make a difference when test printing from the printer. Everything you described sounds ok. Try contacting hp for support (as hard as it sounds). I know hp sux for support but this seems like a simple prob.

Thanks Brian I did contact HP they said that the 3100 printer was not compatable with a network or the jetdirect

Hi,
I have an HP 2200 w/JetDirect installed. I was wondering when the IP address is applied to the JetDirect, when I connect it to my networking switch or do I have to manually add the IP.
