I have a home peer to peer network and have 1 computer windows 2000 and 1 windows ME and a 5 port sw and both work fine. I want to add a network printer using a jetdirect and a hp 3100 laserjet printer so the computers can access the printer at all times when on the network. will I have a problem setting this up and what else will I need. I know I will have to give the jetdirct an IP address and install the printer software on all computers as a network printer

Hi Randy,

To install a network printer its very simple, first you must decide which computer on the network you want to place the printer on, lets decide you want to place the printer on the win2k computer all you have to do is install the priner as you would use it normally and then share the printer.

After the printer has been shared all you do is go to the other computer and then find the printer share which would be in (network neigbourhood, computer name for win2k pc, then the shared printer) after this you can right click and say install, it may ask for drivers so make sure you have the drivers disc ready after you have installed the drivers you can use the printer in all applications.

You may also be able to just point to the printer through the application.

The only problem you may come across when placing the printer onm win2k is that the user has to identify to the computer to use the share, so each user must identify to the win2k pc to gain access to the shares and the printer access.

Hope this helps, if you do have any problems please contact me on our forum.

Randy, It sounds like you have a prob with the printer. Whether or not the printer is connected to anything doesn't make a difference when test printing from the printer. Everything you described sounds ok. Try contacting hp for support (as hard as it sounds). I know hp sux for support but this seems like a simple prob.

Hi,

I have an HP 2200 w/JetDirect installed. I was wondering when the IP address is applied to the JetDirect, when I connect it to my networking switch or do I have to manually add the IP.
