hey,

i have a network set up in my study. the central node is a router of IP address 192.168.1.1 which is not changeable. its subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 this is also the gateway to my internet.

my PC is connected to the router and i have assigned the IP adress to it of 192.168.1.10

i have a second computer which is assigned 192.168.1.20

i have a current printer connected to the network and i assigned it the IP address of 192.168.1.30 these have all been working fine.

i purchased a new printer yesterday and connected it to the router. the printer is a fuji xerox docuprint C525A. Through the control panel on the printer i assigned it the IP address of 192.168.1.40, also assigning it the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the gateway of 192.168.1.1 (as that is the router)

when i ping the ip of the the old printer it responds, but when i ping the IP of the new printer that i have assigned it wont respond. i used the 'add a printer' utility in windows and installed it to my computer fine. the only problem is my network wont recognise the printer!

so does anyone have any ideas why? have i put in the wrong subnet mask? the wrong gateway?

any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Regards
Tom

When you install a printer it asks for a port name. What did you give it? When it's connected to a computer it's usually lpt1 or something like that but a network priter that is not connected to a local machine has to be given another port name.
Do those printers have builtin print servers? If they do, sometimes you have to find out the default IP of it and temporarily change one of your PCs to match it and then change everthing back to match your network subnet. I hope that's clear.

Ping is not a all telling test.

"Through the control panel on the printer i assigned it the IP address of 192.168.1.40, also assigning it the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the gateway of 192.168.1.1 (as that is the router)
"

Use a loopback and look at the lights on the printer nic board if exists.

Use a print setup page from printer to see what else might be enabled or disabled.
Connect to usb or lpt to see if it even works.

Unknown state of cable to printer. Use known working old printer cable.
