Comment:

I have set up a home wired network of two pc's sharing a broadband connection via a D-Link 604 router.
I have just purchased a laptop and would like to make the laptop wireless... the laptop does not have a wireless card so if i bought one of these and put this in the laptop then I assume I need a Wireless Access Point, if so, can I simply plug this into one of the two spare RJ45 LAN ports on the router? Will this work and is it possible?
TIA

that would work but may take some config. If I were you I would get a wireless router, most have LAN ports on them also, it sounds like this would work for you.

A wireless access point plugged onto a LAN port will work fine with your existing router. I have a DLink wireless access point plugged into my Linksys wired router and it works great. Just give it an IP in the same range as your PC's.

It should be noted, though, that most wireless routers and access points can not communicate with each other over wireless connections. This isn't a problem for you, as you are connecting them with LAN cable, but it's something to keep in mind if you want to expand.

thanks for the helpful advice. I still want to keep my wired network as ive read it is faster and more secure. The wireless is just a add-on for occasional use of my laptop. I was a bit confused as to the data rates of wireless networks, some are 11 or 22mbps, whereas my internet connection is 512kb/sec. Im hopeless at internet speed mathematics but what would match or be able to provide (if any) my actual speed?
Thanks again.
