Hello

I have got two computers,

a pc which is connected to the internet using a USB based ADSL MODEM
and a laptop which is connected to my pc using a router.

is it possible to use ICS for surfing the internet from my laptop in such a configuration,
or iCS does not allow the use of a router in between laptop and pc

i have read that ICS requires the use of a cross over cable in case of a direct pc-laptop connection.
can i use a regular "non cross over cable" instead.

is there any way else i can surf the net using the router as a go between (sin ce i can get the computers to share files)

why haven't you followed the routers setup instructions so both your pc and laptop can share files, be on the internet and both are protected?

There is no need to ICS with a router.

Knowing the correct answer and giving a correct answer, are two different things

That's assuming the modem can be plugged into the router. As it is a USB modem plugged directly into the computer the router can serve no useful purpose. What you need is a switch or the switch component of the router, disabling the NAT and DHCP on the router. You will still need to use ICS.

You only need a cross-over cable if you are connecting direct PC to PC. If the is a switch in the network, a straight through patch cable will do.

YES ICS and a Xover RJ45 Cable will suffice:

Very few DSL modems are USB only. 95% of the DSL modems that have a USB port also have an ethernet port.

If your modem has an ethernet port, it would be better to connect it the router's WAN port instead of using the USB connection to the computer. Most DSL routers have builtin switches with 4 or more LAN ports which will allow you to connect it to both computers. If yours only has 1 LAN port, then connect it and the computers to a separate switch.
