Excuse my naivite, but can someone give me a brief explanation of the difference between an AP and a router. I want to set up a home network for two desktops and a laptop. Many thanks.

You need a router, or a router with built in Access Point. A router allows you to share an IP address between systems. Wi-Fi routers also come with a built in Access Point (the wi-fi part). An Access Point does not have the router function that allows sharing an IP address.

Hi,
For a home situation a built-in router/ap is very usefull and most of the times easy to install.
If you've got a larger network, I'd suggest putting a server on the internet site with a detailed firewall configuration, and an AP.
