Hi everybody,

I would like to access my external hard drive "seagate" via my wireless router (3Com). What is the easiest way to do this?

Thanks for your help

Attach the drive to a computer, then connect the computer to the router.

Thanks. I was trying to avoid having the hard drive connected to my laptop.

I was hoping that I could connect it to the router and access it from anywhere in the house via the router. Is this possible?

Thanks

There must be some form of computer to connect the disk drive to the network. To connect an external hard drive the simplist may be a network attached storage device like the Linksys NSLU2.

I just purchased a Belkin N+ wireless router, which has a USB connector in the back that one can connect up to a hard drive. I did that with a Seagate FreeAgent drive, and got it going relatively easily -- with one exception: I had to temporarily mount the USB drive directly to a computer and rename it from "FreeAgent Drive" to something shorter (I used "Seagate").
Then I could access it using \\belkin-ip-address\Seagate from more than one computer in my local network.

Now, if only I could get the Seagate backup software that came on the drive (and that I installed from it) could recognize the existence of that drive. It seems like it's only set up to detect directly connected USB FreeAgent drives.

Anyone have any ideas? (Yeah, I know I could contact Seagate, and I would if I could get my account on their site to work!).

I don't think the existing software will work. You will need
software on each computer to backup over the network.
