Hi, Mine seems like a common problem and I have seen many suggestion to resolve - none have yet worked.
I have a simple home network - 2 units both operating XP Pro SP2. Host unit has modem and web access P4 processor 2nd unit has P3 processor.
Neither unit has passwords (only my wife and myself use) set all drives and printers for sharing. Internet access no problems on either unit. Both units can see the other in the network. Host can access all drives in the 2nd unit with no problems. The 2nd unit can 'see' the host but cannot get access - 'you may not have permission...."
When I try to acces the host from the 2nd computer by Start>run>192.168.etc still get the same message
Have tried many many things - have set up new user accounts on each machine with the same name (haven't used passwords though". Have tried a password recovery program to see if there were any secret passwords I wasn't aware of - no luck, no passwords exist. Have deleted then reloaded File and printer sharing. Have checked and unchecked the simple file sharing. Have disabled all firewalls. Have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP.Any more ideas???

What is between the 2 PCs, a router, switch, both? When you do start, run, it's supposed to be \\192.168.0.whatever You need the back slashes before the IP address. If there are accounts, make sure that they are added in the control panel under users.

Make sure BOTH computers are on the SAME workgroup....
Have a common user account on both computers and the SAME pw on each machine...
Share BOTH C:\ drives...
If you are NOT using DHCP, make sure BOTH computers have the SAME subnet...
After you get things going...then you can remove the share on both C:\ drives and share just the specific folders you want to have access to...

Hi
Computers are connected via a simple hub. The IP address was entered ok - I can find the host IP address but cannot access. Tried to use the DOS command NET USE * \\192.168 etc etc. Using this command you can actually use an administrator user account and password from the host computer. Finds the IP address ok but same message comes up = do not have permission to access.
All users appear in user accounts with appropriate user rights.
both computers are in the same workgroup
created 2 new identical user accounts (did not use any passwords)
all drives are shared - have turned sharing off rebooted then on again and rebooted - still no luck
Am using DHCP. But also tried manually setting the same subnet mask - no difference.
It must be some kind of security issue as the network seems to be working fine and both computers do appear in the workgroup both are accesible from the host but the 2nd computer just cannot get security clearance to access the host.

Is Norton or windows firewall running on that thing? SP2 and Dcom all have to be told to let the connection happen.

Windows firewall is off on both computers.
Do use AVG antivirus - have tried dissabling, makes no difference.
Also used Zone Labs Firewall. Turned it off and even uninstalled, still makes no difference.
