ok. heres the deal so far... 2 pcs connected with win XP pro, pc1 and pc2 (for ease of writing) pc 1 can access and ping pc 2 pc2 can access but not ping pc1
why would this be occurring?? shouldnt that mean there is no connectivity in one direction if pc2 cant ping pc1?? cheers for any thoughts

PING is a utility that uses IP's ICMP packets. When you issue a ping command, ICMP request-type packets are sent to the target IP address. The target machines replies back using ICMP reply-type packets.
It is possible for a firewall to allow or deny both types of ICMP packets. In your case, it seems an access-rule is blocking ICMP packets.
Thanks.

I can't think of any other reason for this other than a Firewall/filter in between those two PCs.
If you are really keen to know, I would recommend a packet analyzer to see who is dropping the ball.
Thanks
