IBSS 54g mode: 54g auto
IBSS 54g protection mode: Auto
IBSS channel number: 11
Locally administered MAC address: n/a
Power output: 100%
Power save mode: Disable
Rate: 54
Recieve buffer: 64
Reset Dongle after disable: Enabled
Roam Tendency: moderate
Roaming decision: Optimize bandwidth
RTS threshold: 2347
Transmit buffer: 20
Wireles settings: Enabled
WMM: Auto
Xpress technology: enabledany help is appreciated. thanks

First. I know its a hassle. But to rule out the (vista) computer settings you need to physically connect the vista computer to the ethernet where your xp is and see if the speed is still slow. If it's not, its clearly a wireless and or driver/software issue
If it is, then its a much deeper issue with more trail and error diagnostics. There are also several things to take into factor.
What usb wifi adapter do you have?
Try and go online and see if there are any later drivers for this?
What is your link quality for the wifi?
Are you using the vista wifi or the usb adapter wifi program?
If your using the usb program. There might be a conflict between vista (sense it automatically runs wifi connection at start up by default)
I recommend the vista wifi and just disable the usb adapter program. but you can do vise versa as well. either way one should be disabled to prevent any kind of conflicts at all. Also, how far this the computer away from the wifi? this could be an issue. Are there a lot of thick walls? are you close to your your circut breaker box? or are you close to your dishwasher and or dryer/washer?

Thank you for the fast reply, greatly appreciated!
I brought my wireless computer downstairs and hooked it up wired, speed was fine.
I do have the same brand wireless adaptor as the modem, same specs (enhanced wireless g), made sure of that at time of purchase.
I am using the windows vista wireless program, seeing as my driver didnt come with an individual program and told me in the owners manual to use windows.
Distance and signal is not an issue, i always get two or three bars.
I have discovered something that may be helpful. I only have extremely slow speeds while logged onto Aol Instant Messenger. Whenever I start the computer up, the speed is fine. once i log onto aim, it goes to crap. Is this due to maybe aim using the same internet port as ie? Is this a common problem? Can this be easily fixed?
Again, thank you for all your help, it is greatly appreciated. If you need any additional info, let me know.
