Hello all, I just recently started college and i am living here on campus. I used to play xbox online all the time when i was in high school but now that im in college my big problem is that the internet in the dorms is not fast enough to handle online gaming. From what i understand, every building on campus is on a differnt subnet and all the building are connected in a double ring topography via fiber optic. when i go to class i can easily get 10mbps of bandwidth but in the dorms im lucky to get 400k. what i want to do is utilize the higher speed internet connection in one of the class buildings so that i can play online virtually lag-free.

The question i have is this:
Is there a way to reroute my packets from my xbox so that when i connect to the internet it would go through a differnt building?

I was thinking of trying to do kind of a mini-vpn thing but i dont know how to set it up or anything.

Does anyone have any ideas?

NO.

Old wheezer rant ahead, warning. Faint of hearts need to move on.

I think you should rethink this.

#1 Game playing at school to begin with. Don't you have better things to do with your time? You could develop friendships or maybe consider arts or music or sports. There might be girls if all else fails. (a bunch of young ladies and all you do is want to play games online? SON what is wrong with you?)

#2 Is the belief that you can somehow cheat the rules of networking. Think of it as saying you have a POTS modem and want to use the high speed in the next town.

#3 Getting kicked out school for hacki9ng the schools network.

End of old wheezers rant.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

personally, i thought that was a touch rude.

#1 I do play sports. I play volleyball and flag football for my college. I have a social life, and i have a challenging class schedule with a double major in information technology management and computer science. I just figured that between classes, sports, and friends, if i could find an hour to play halo 3 online with my friends(yes, video games is a social event) we wouldn't have to lag our asses off and loose a game to a bunch of 6-year-olds because they have a faster connection!

#2 it has to be possible. if i have to mount a high gain directional gird outside my window to pick up the wireless in the class building, ill do it. why? because you told me it cant be done and now i just have to prove you wrong!

#3 i dont think of it as hacking. just "using my resources at hand"

End of Fritty's Rant

Ok, I work in a university as a network technician. We have an explicit "appropriate use" policy. I'd wager dollars to donuts you signed one where you attend college. Before you do anything else, reread it. If you do something considered inappropriate (by the college as defined in their policy) or illegal, you're likely to get kicked out, no refunds. If you do something illegal, count on the above as well as getting arrested.

Trust me on this, they do monitor for anyone circumventing their security. If you attempt to bypass their security, you will get caught. You may not consider it hacking, but by legal definition it may very well be. Even if it's not illegal, if it's agains the appropriate use policy (and from the sounds of it to me, it will be) it can still get you kicked out of college.

You can't do what you want. Jefro's example of connecting via dialup to a DLS connection in another physical location is on the button. You're still restricted by the slowest link (as always in any network).

What you can do is contact the IT people and explain your problem to them and see if they can offer any help. If they can't, check with them about getting highspeed hooked up in your room. If you have a phone in there, it's a possibility. If not, you'll have to live with what you have.

One more argument to consider besides the other (excellent) arguments against what you propose:

If you could do it, don't you think everyone else would be doing it? Do you think you're the first student to think of this? Heck, even the faculty is smart enough to think of this. Chances are, unless there's a "How-to" manual floating around the campus grapevine, it's not possible. It may have been possible, but it got abused to the point that your college's IT guys had to firewall against it.

If you really want blazing-fast access while away at college what you need is to find 3-4 guys to go in with you on a rental house, install high-speed internet, and network it between your bedrooms.
