im going to set up a network in my apartment and i would like to know what would be better. it is going to be 4 computers (2pc, 2 labtops, 2-3 printers). we already have cable modem but only one computer is hooked up thus far. should i get a router or hub or both? also does it matter if all the machines are running the same OS? i think everyone else is running windows ME and i am running 98se.

I would get a router and a hub or one of those routers with the hub built in.
It doesn't matter what OS they run.

Agreed...a multiport highspeed internet router is your best bet. Then you don't need to buy a hub as well.
