3rd switch as uplink?

Specs: Not applicable

Want to uplink nortel 470 stack to Hp Procurve core. GB port on nortel hardcoded to 1000 FD (cannot change) HP will only autonegotiate GB.

Thinking I could maybe take a 3rd switch that speaks both speeds as the middle man, plug nortel stack into gb fd port, run another cable out of the auto port to the HP auto port

I cant seem to make it work, am I missing something? Shouldnt need to route. Any ideas on config, should be basic, default config, plug it in?

It's been my experience you have to have the setting the same on both ends of a link or it won't work. If you can't change either one to match the other end then your idea may be the only answer to the problem. You would just have to make sure that again, the ports on the ends of both links match the settings of the other end of the link.

So, the port on your intermediary switch that is connecting to the Nortel will have to set to 1000 FD and the port on that same intermediary that connects to the HP would have to be set to auto

If that doesn't work, there are other issues. Are the ports on the HP and the Nortels setup as "trunk" ports? If so, then the ports on the intermediary would also have to be.

The port settings are correct and they are NOT trunk ports, the ports light up and I see chatter but nodes cannot talk if they have to traverse that middle switch. Did not have time to really dig in for I had to put it back to "normal"
