2701hg-g works with a hub not with a switch

Specs: Windows Vista
The techs at Best Buy and at Tiger Direct do not know why my Gateway 2wire modem from Bell Sympatico allows me to add a hub but not a switch. When my network computers are hard wire connected through the hub, they all work. When I replace the hub with a switch (to increase speed and efficiency) I can no longer connect to the internet. Interestingly, the PC sees the gateway 2wire, and shows connectivity in the status window, but does not allow me to surf the internet. The guys at Best Buy felt the 2wire was blocking the switch, so I called Bell and asked. They said the 2wire is open port, so there is no reason the switch should not work. I changed the switch to another one - a different brand - but got the same results. I tried rebooting everything after changing out the hub for the switch, but that did not help. So here I am with my old 10/100 hub reconnceted and everything is fine again, except of course at old slow speeds rather than new faster ones the switch should be able to provide me with. Anybody else experience this or know how to make the 2wire work with a switch? Thanks for your help!

did you try using a crossover cable instead of a patch cable?

No I did not! Unfortunately the modem is in one room and the hub or switch is ina nother room. The hard wire that runs between the two rooms is fished through the wall, so it is not very easy to change. I wonder if there is an adaptor I could plug into one end of the ethernet cable that would convert it to a crossover?
