Comment:

PROBLEM: 2 PC's "networked" together cannot see each other in Network Neighborhood or ping each other.

SETUP:
I have 2 PC's with Win98 on both, Ether NIC's and a 5 port hub. Cable Internet Access comes in through cable to cable modem then to NIC #1 in PC1. Of course, PC1 NIC1 has its own required settings to access Internet, and PC1 has Computer name and Workgroup name assigned by Cable Internet Provider.

PC1 NIC2 runs to port 1 in the 5 port hub (LinkSys 5-port Workgroup Hub) and PC2 NIC1 runs into port 2 in the hub.

NIC's configured as below:

PC1 NIC1 connected to cable modem >>> workgroup: @Home
IP: some @Home IP
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

PC1 NIC2 connected to hub >>>
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

PC2 NIC3 connected to hub >>>
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

I know I've committed some basic Networking mistake here, but am not a Networking "smart" guy.

Any help??

Do you have the following protocols & services in Network Properties

Client for Microsoft Networks
TCP/IP
File & Print Sharing

Also is it setup with Microsoft Family Logon.

You will also need to set your default gateway as the IP of the Cable Modem

Outside of that, it would probably be easier for you to have a look at
www.homepcnetwork.com for you home network setup and something like
http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_lans.shtml
for your sharing needs (this page has a lot of related links)

Good luck

-Make sure file print sharing is added
-TCP/IP and NetBEUI are both added
-two different subnets one for internet (255.255.254.0) and one for home LAN (255.255.255.0)
-Make sure that Client for Micrsoft Networks is added)
-and make sure you are logging onto your PC with the Microsoft client.
-make sure the gateway IP is added to the client PC

*if you are still having trouble use WinGate or something of that nature.
