I have 2 computers both with network cards and would like to use my 10/100 hub to connect to the internet using a DSL modem connection.

Can the DSL connection be plugged directly into the hub enabling both computers to be connected to the internet?

NO! Bad Idea. Get a router.
You can only log on once with the modem so only one computer connects at a time. Hackers and trojans will love you too.
A router will log on and the two computers connect to the router through networking.

Most ISPs only provide 1 IP Address per connection. A (very) few run a DHCP server on their end which allows you to connect multiple PCs to their modem. You probably do need to dump the hub and pick up a router.

Or, you could convert one of your PC's into a router by adding a second NIC. One NIC for the internet, one for your LAN. With 2000/98 SE/XP you can enable ICS on the internet NIC to proxy your internet to the other PC's in your LAN and still use the hub. A NIC is cheaper than a router/hub.

It's not a bad idea to have 2 pc with hub and your dsl plug in to your hub as long as you have a proper firewall software i.e. ZoneAlarm, Norton Firewall etc. also if your internet provider allows you to connect multiple PC.

Thanks for all the advice which brings up another question. If I did add the second NIC to the server would this also be prone to hacking and viruses? I really don't feel like setting up an insecure connection that would effectively be called 'a sitting duck':)
