Hi,

I have several computers on a wired network through a 100MBPS router.

2 of the computers are regularly backing up 1GB+ files over the network which takes quite a time. The 2 computers both support 1GB ethernet and so are being slowed by the 100MBS router. I was wondering if I were to use a 1GBPS switch to connect the 2 together and then connect the switch to the router, I could get a 1GBPS connection between the 2 computers?

Thanks

Pavesa

You would get 1Gb connection between the two computers but don't expect your data transfer speeds to increase by much.

I have yet to see a hard disk, PATA or SATA, that can deliver a sustained data rate of 100Mbs let alone 1Gbs. It is the speed that the drives can deliver the data that is the limiting factor, not the bandwidth of the communication medium.

Now if you had four or five computers all trying to transfere huge files at the same time then you would see a difference.
