I have an older laptop I want to use for war driving. Due to it's alternative daily use, I cannot load Linux on it and so I have to do this from Windows 98SE. I love netstumbler but I'm having a hard time finding a compatible PCMCIA wireless card because my computer only accepts 16-bit cards. So, does anyone know of a 16-bit wireless card that works with NetStumbler on Windows 98SE?

AFAIK ALL NEW WiFi Cards are 32bit Cardbus.

You need to look for older 2Mbps Cards like a ZoomAir 4000/4005:

Other older cards are Proxim/Agere:
* Wireless PC Card
* Wireless Embedded Card
* Wireless Integrated Card
* Wireless PCI Card
* Wireless Mini-PCI Card

MOST are, but not all. For example, the NETGEAR MA401 is a 16-bit card that meets all the 802.11 requirements. However, it isn't compatible with netstumbler under Windows 98se.

Does it say anywhere that it is in fact 16-bit? It just says "PCMCIA" on the data sheet.

Ryan, on the specs of the other cards it states PCMCIA CARDBUS, so as this product though listed is obsolete and only supports 11b, I would take a punt on £16 UK and hope and pray it is 16bit.

Good luck

This is from:

» The ORiNOCO "Classic" (Proxim model 8410) and newer 802.11b card (Proxim model 8420), along with their OEM versions, should work on Windows XP, 2000, Me, 98, 95, and Server 2003

This is from:

8420-WD ORiNOCO 11b Client Gold PC Card
8421-WD ORiNOCO 11b Client Silver PC Card

So unless someone has used this combination it is time to decide wether tot ake a punt!!

You can most likely find much info in NetStumbler website or Forums, yes??

Hi,

The image link posted by P&S about Orinoco's 8421-
WD PC Card shows no golden strip (ground-plane) on
top of the connector. CardBus products use one...
