Hi, i'm using a cable modem to connect to the internet, rated by NTL as 128k The maximum speed of downloads is about 29,000 B/sec. Could anyone tell me if this is right? Obviously they allow upload and download speeds when taking into account the 128k figure. But i just wanted to know if the download speed i get is about average for a 128k modem and is there any way of increasing this on my part. TIA

First of all I would see if any other sites have the same download problem , next I would do a few traceroute to the site your trying to download from, the site could be experiencing heavy traffic or there could problems between hops.

thanx Brian, im actually using WinMX which is P2P file sharing. It's just no matter what i do, it never goes above 29,000 b/sec even cable to cable connections. Maybe the ISP has set it to this and there is nothing i can do. It was just a general query to see if i was paying for something i wasnt getting full advantage of thats all. I wasnt sure how ISP's work out their bandwidth.

It would vary, but it should be better then 29K, I would get rid of that 128K modem and just use a 56k modem. I am sure you do better then 29K. Goto download.com and download a bandwidth meter, that would show what kind of downloads your getting.

My Toshiba cable modem averages around 160KB per second downloads (1.6 MBits per second).

Thanks for your help folks, i've tried several online test meters and bandwidth meters, they all say i average at 30kb/sec which is not good for a 128k modem! So i'm contacting my ISP for them to lift whatever limiter they have put on it. :o)
