I have a 10/100 router, and am thinking of upgrading my network with new 10/100/1000 switch placed off the router. Yes I am aware that my internet will only be at 10/100 since the cable modem is connected to the router. I have set up a media server, and will be moving 2 gig files around and wondered if I upgrading all the machines to 10/100/1000 nics, and got a 10/100/1000 switch to connect them all, and to the router. Would i get a 10/100/1000 speed when connecting from machine to machine, or would the old 10/100 router slow down my transfer's through the switch. I would connect all machines to the switch, and run a wan or crossover cable from the switch to the router, to use dhcp, and internet from the router.

If all PC with 1000Mbps network adapter are connected to the same Gigabit switch, you will get bandwidth 1000Mbps. The bandwidth from switch to router will be 100Mbps.

It depends on what you are going to buy , if you think you are going to gain a lot if buy one of these less than $100 gig switches that are out there you will likely be dissapointed , if you are going to invest a little money and get something like a HP or cisco switch then you might see better results . The cheap end switches just don't have a backplane that can handle very much and as usual you get what you pay for .
