Ok I am wanting to buy a 10/100 5 port switch. But according to what I have read I need to buy a crossover cable if am connecting a MDI (workstation) with another MDI because the recieve and transmit pairs are swapped. Is this correct?

Not really.

You'll need a crossover cable to connect the MDI workstation to the MDI-X port.

The MDI hub ports are designed to connect directly to workstations. You only need crossover cables to connect two like devices together, eg hub to hub, workstation to workstation. As long as you're going workstation to hub, you're OK.
