I have a laptop with Windows XP Professional. I came home over break (it's a college laptop) and tried using windows xp to setup a network between my desktop and the laptop. However, as soon as I enabled it and restarted, my laptop comes up with the netware login screen (normally does not do that). I try using my college login, doesn't work. it then comes up witha windows logon (username: user, and no password). I did not change the username or password so it should be just user and no password, but it will NOT let me log in. So until I go back to college (unless someone here helps me) I can't even log onto the computer... any ideas???

"A domain controller cannot be found for the specified domain" is the message I get when the computer first boots up. The administrator at my college told me that's because they set netware to not allow the sharing of files over a network... (it'd be nice if they would've told me that before I came home!)
Btw- this is Netware 4.90.0.0.702

You need to have admin rights to change the way a user logs on to the computer, this is done under the control panel in user accounts, But you must be have admin rights on that computer.

Hope this helps

I looks like you may be logging in to both NDS (you mention Client 4.90) and a MS domain (you mention at domain controller missing message) at college.

Normally a notebook set up for use on a mixed network, and additionally as an independent workstation, should have a local copy of your domain profile that allows you to log in to the workstation when off the network.

The Novell client should be set up to show the "workstation only" tickbox on the GINA to avoid waiting for non-existant networks.

Unless you have access to a local administrator account on the notebook, then you don't have rights to change those parameters.

Whilst it is feasible to connect to a private network at home, I suspect your administrator would not be in favour of that. As an administrator myself, I sure would not allow that. Even with the best of intentions, not keeping strict policies on such matters often results in huge amounts of wasted time cleaning up virusses, illegal software, copyright violations, pornography etc on returned machines.

If you don't have admin rights and need it, just reset the administrator password. Its microsoft and as with all there OS's, you just need to boot to a disk and reset the admin password, then you can access the machine and do whatever you want with it.
