I was just wondering. I have some machines at work in a Novell Netware 4.11 environment and when just TCP/IP is loaded, the network will shut down fine. However, when IPX is loaded, Windows 98 will not shut down most times. We have Dell computers with the 3C905B network card I believe. I've tried most common solutions but I think this one is strictly network related. Is there any suggestions. One guy at Dell said that the network card was preset to shut down within so many milliseconds. However, it never gets a response from the network and that's why it hangs. I just don't know how to go to Novell Netware and change the response times. Any suggestions on the workstation side or the server side would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

We had a similar problem. It was resolved by updating the Novell client to the latest version on the workstations.
Hope this helps :-)

Definitely upgrade your Novell Client for Novell Networks. Or you might want to switch to the Microsoft Client for Novell Networks.
Would appreciate any pros/cons info regarding this advice.

Try disabling PCI IRQ Steering-it worked for us. For a long-term solution, reseat your nic cards out of slot 1.(It's a conflict between the AGP slot and PCI slot 1)

I was having the same problems with Win 98. I was running the latest client, I updated NIC drivers and also tried a long list of recommendations from microsoft, all to no avail. Someone on this forum posted this fix and it worked for me. Go to www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm and go to win 98 updates. There is a file there that will fix this problem.

If all else fails you can do this:
make a shortcut on the desktop that points to c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe, exitwindows
This will force Windows 98 to shut down and you won't get the annoying "scandisk" error when you reboot again.

Response number 8 from Don works great - I've used it many times over the years to force the shutdown. It does indeed solve the problem in most cases.

There is a Windows 98 issue with hanging upon shut down with mapped drives in use.
We fixed it by updating the W98 installation using Windows Update on the internet. The mapped drives fix is usually not listed in the critical updates section. Scroll down and find it. One we applied this mapped drives fix to W98 and the other W98 shut down issue patch, all of our machines have been shutting down quite nicely.
