Subject: Updating Netware box 4.11 to 6.0
Comment:

My set up is as follows:

I have 2 Novell servers, 1 is the File server running Netware 4.11. The 2nd server is my Groupwise 5.5 box running Netware 4.11. These two servers sync the NDS.

Here is what I want to do:

Upgrade the Hardware (replace the server with a new one) AND update Netware 4.11 to 6.0.

My Questions

1) NDS: Since the servers sync the NDS, do I even need to worry about backing this up off the Email server? Are there any problems that I might have since one is 4.11 box and the new one is 6.0 box?

2) LICENSE: Currently, my email server has a 50-user license on it. I was told I don't need but a 2-user license since I can use the Groupwise server as a client-server box. Is this true? I only have roughly 25 users on it right now anyway. The ONLY thing the Groupwise Netware server is used for, is for Groupwise. For clarification, I'm talking about licenses for Netware 6.0 not Groupwise.

3) Any additional input or thoughts are welcome.

I have more questions, but they refer to Groupwise, so I will post them on that forum. Thanks for ANY help.

Dan,
We did an over the wire migration from 4.11
to 5.1 using the same tool that is used for
6.0 and it went very smoothly.

One problem you will run into with this is
getting your nds versions compatible, and
you will want to get all the service packs
and updates for 4.11 installed prior to
your install for both your machines.
Don't let anyone tell you this is a
non-issue.

I can't help you with Groupwise, as after
using it for a year it drove me buggy and
I went to a unix based solution.

Good Luck.

Hi Dan,

If your NW6.0 box is being SOLEY used for GW in a Client/Server environment (using IP for connections to the post office), then you do not need to have a Netware user license for each client using GW. You must be set up in Client/Server mode though (do not use UNC paths to connect clients to the post office). If your users are logging into the GW server and using file services, then you will definitely need the extra licenses. Hope this helps!

both junky_toof and satik are correct. Nw6 licensing is very different from 4.11. It is user centric not server centric. each user who logs in to the nw6 server is given a license. that user does not need any addtitional licenses to login/attach or access any other nw6 server services as log as they are in the same tree. We use groupwise and access via IP (client/server mode) and only have a two user nw5.1 license on the email server. It handles over 800 users easily.
