We fired our Novell expert and now I am trying to learn Netware 4.2 to get us by till we replace this system. I have ordered a Sybex book, but it is not here yet.
As a form of training for myself, I am trying to build a server just like the one we have running. We had spare identical hardware. The server will connect to 20 DOS client workstations. The server will be administrated from the server, never from the workstations (workstations are used in a factory environment for automation).
My simple question is, how do I look around the SYS volume on the server? I have done it from a workstation on other networks before by mapping a drive from Explorer, but on this system I need to do it on the server. I assume Novell has some sort of DOS-like commands to use on the Console screen, but I have no idea on how to look around the Netware partition. Any help to get me by until the book arrives would be appreciated.

This is a tough one....you fire your SysAdmin, then want other SysAdmins to help you for free. Conflicted.
Actually, NW does not have a set of DOS-like commands for things like that. It was intended to be done from the workstation. They have released a tool to plug this hole though. Go to the Patches and Files area of http://support.novell.com and search for toolbox.
Once you've loaded toolbox.nlm, you can use DOS (or in some cases *nix) commands to browse directories and files. It even gives you access to the DOS partition, something you can't normally get to from the server prompt.
Hope this helps. BTW, this probably won't be in your Sybex book.

Thanks for the information.
Do not feel too sorry for the person that got fired. He dug his own grave. While we (his fellow technicians) liked him, we were not too surprised to find out he finally pushed the envelope too far. He had flirting with disaster for quite a while.

From the console, type load edit, then hit insert key and choose the volume. The sys volume isn't on the DOS partition, so I'm not sure what the other guy meant.
