Arcserve fails every time when I try to backup files with portuguese characters.
My server is NetWare 4.11 with SP9 and i am using later TSA410.NLM.

I have been using ArcServe 6.6 for a little over 4 years backing up 54 Netware 4.11 servers. Then we upgraded the servers to 5.1. I got to say I have seen a lot of problems with ArcServe but nothing like this. What is the error # you are getting for this problem (Exxxxxx)? I have a few folders that have potuguese documents, but again I have no problem backing them up. Let me know because this sounds very interesting

Hello Underdog.
The message that Arcserve shows is:

Aug-06 08:56:49 603 E3011 Failed to open file
VOL1:\TRABALHO\CIR_GE~1\EUGENIO\PREFEI~1\PL\SÍTIO_~1.DOC, fffdfff2

I see this message to many files with some characters from portuguese, like ç, á, ŕ and ă.

Hey Eduardo,
I don't beleive that the problem is directly about the Portuguese files. If the only error # your are getting is E3011 that error refrences files that have a ".ddf" extension. If you have files of this type you will have to exclude them from your backup. ArcServe 6.6 does not support the backing up of these file types. I have one more thing for you to try also, if your willing. Unload the TSADOSP.NLM, this is the NLM for DOS Long File Names. I could type the whole thought behind this procedure, but you will just have to trust me on this one. I base it upon the one section in your post about the error and the "fffdfff2" in paticular. If it works I will go into greater detail. Keep me posted on your process.

I didn´t load TSADOSP on my server. The .ddf files was deleted from my ArcserveIT server, as you said, but I had new error messages. On the first message, the portuguese characteres are on the file name. On the second message, the directory name has portuguese characteres.

Sorry for the delays in responses but the only time I get for this type of leisure is after work. We are getting pounded @ work with school starting back up real soon. Plus we are in the middle of installing ZENworks, upgrading to NW 6, upgrading our GroupWise system, and installing NetMail for our students. I've got my notes and logs for ArcServe here @ home in paper form and trying to put them into digital format. I can never get any good information on CA's support site, that is why I rely on my own notes I've kept over the years. I think I have seen just about every problem that there is with ArcServe. And then up jumps something new.

Your problem seems to be progressing up the Directory structure. This last error you got, based upon my notes, is pointing at a corrupt volume, directory or both. The only thing I can suggest @ this point is to run Vrepair on the volume that ArcServe bombed out on. As you know, run it till there is no errors. And if it was me I would followup VRepair with a DSRepair using the Unattended Full Repair option. And again run DSRepair until there is Zero errors. At this point I can not be any more specific as to what the problem is. Until we got ArcServe settled in, we might chase a problem for 2-3 hours. Sometimes it was a problem with ArcServe, sometimes it was a problem with a Server. Let me know what happens. This is no longer just trying to help a fellow Administrator, it's starting to become personal.

I left a post last nite but it looks like it did not stick. I went into great detail on what I thought the problem was. But I will give you the Readers Digest version in this post. What I said was is that it looks like the problem is progressing up the Directory Sructure. Looking through my notes on the last error you had points to a corrupt
directory or volume. Perform a VRepair on the volume until it is error free. I also suggested that you follow the Vepair up with a DSRepair, again run it until you get Zero (0) errors. Please let me know how this turns out, or if you have corrected the problem with other means. I am logging this into my
files.
