I'm a Novell newbie and just finished installing 5.1 with SP6. The problem i'm receiving is that when server is trying to boot into GUI, it stops and says btcpcom.nlm was suspended. It won't boot into GUI. Any suggestion?

Edwin

Edit autoexec.ncf and place a ";" in front of the "startx" command.
This will cancel loading the GUI so the server can boot correctly. Then you can resolve the GUI issue separetly at leisure.

I have a feeling that btcpcom.nlm file is kind of important though, I don't think your server is going to like running when that nlm is suspended.
Have you had the server running properly prior to installing sp6?

sabotage,

thanks for your reply. This is my first server and I was able to download 5.1 w/ sp6. I will edit the autoexec.ncf file and see what happens. I also feel btcpcom.nlm is very important. I did searches all day yesterday and couldn't find anything useful. Do you know if netware has any know problems running on an AMD 850 duran machine? Thanks again sabotage

Ok, so it was a 5.1 installation with a service pack 6 overlay. You may have a piece of hardware that Netware doesn't like then. The Duron shouldn't be a problem (I've run a couple of Duron servers without any problems) but the motherboard or RAM it runs on might be.
Netware is very fussy about RAM! If it's even a little bit dodgy, Netware will not run properly. If you've got some other memory lying about, try that.

let me know how you get on and I'll help out best I can

Sabotage,

Well, I couldn't get 5.1 w/SP6 to work. So I installed 5 and it went fine. Not sure what the problem was. I know for a fact that 5.1 w/ SP6 works because I have installed it on another computer before just to test out. Thanks for your help.

Sabotage,

I have another problem that i hope you can help me with. I finished installing my netware 5 server. It's up and running. The problem is that it's hooked up to my Netgear router with 2 other computers running XP. I can't seem to ping the server with the other two systems. The port that the server is hooked up to is not even lite. I know for a fact that the cable is good because i plugged it into the other system and the light came on. What can I do? I set the server IP to 192.168.0.10, 255.255.255.0, and router (gateway) 192.168.0.1. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions? thanks

Hey Edwin,

Sounds strange if you don't even get an activity light on the switch.
I can only offer some simple things to try:

plug the netware server into a different port in the switch
try running the server's network card at half-duplex (load inetcfg at the server console to do this easily)
can the server ping either of the XP clients or the gateway IP or itself?

Sabotage,

I did everything you listed and still wasn't able to ping the XP clients or gateway. But i figured it out. My network cable isn't long enough so i bought this cat5 extender. It's the one were you plug 2 cables in. Well that was the problem. I took out the extender and it worked. Dont' understand why because with the extender on, I plugged the cable in and it worked on the XP client. Very strange indeed. Thanks for all your help
