Reply: (edit)Both systems offer nearly equal features. IPX (under NetWare) is a little bit quicker than TCP/IP and more secure. If you are addicted to a windows-based system (like persons who cannot work without a Norton Commander under DOS), I think you choice is clear. If you want to install internet access, Windows NT is a good choice, but NetWare 5.x also works. My experience is: under similar environments, NetWare is more stable than Windows NT Server. That is security, too! MfG Steff

Reply: (edit)Johny, Have you ever worked with Netware B4? If not, you may be better off with a Windows NT network. I personally prefer Netware over NT but if you don't know either very well, I'd go with NT. Like Steff wrote, NT's got the simplicity but Netware's got the Security and Stability. What is your hardware budget? It has been my experience that NT is a "1 hit wonder". It seems to be OK as long as you run 1 app per server. I personally would not run a single NT server for file, print, DB engine and Email all together. I have done this exact setup with Netware though (file/print/btieve/groupwise=no sweat).

Reply: (edit)Don't get me wrong! I wouldn't say it was a mistake to take MS courses. Again, nothings wrong with running an NT network. If you have a blank check to buy whatever you need then setup something that you can support. If you know NT like the back of your hand and don't know anything about Netware, for goodness sakes don't install a Netware network. Yes, there's an equivlent to those products from Novell. Novell uses Netscape Webserver and Boarder Manager is more than just a proxy server, but functions similarly. Ohhh, T1 eh? You do have money. Either deploy an NT network and live to tell about it or throw out a Netware network and start your Novell Press collection today (I got mine!). Your choice.

Reply: (edit)Hi Jonathan! I´ve seen in the past, that many networks start with only one system. After a few years, you see that the system admins take best of both (or three) worlds. So my suggestion for a really big money buy is: take Netware for file and print services, WinNT for Internet access and Solaris for your SQL-DBs. No joke! It´s like a HiFi rack. If you buy all stuff from one company, you´ll get a midrange result. If you really want the best, you have to buy (and learn) a lot of different systems, because every one has its pres and cons. 4 more infos email me. Regards, Steff

Reply: (edit)What Stef said is right. As far as I know Netware is very good in handling file and printer services(/share). Even if you like to setup gateway/proxy, Netware is best enough. NT also not bad for proxy actually. If you want to control workstation user pcs for configuration and software/application upload/download, NT is the best as I confider.Get best result with NADII 2000. If you talk about DataBase Management, Sun Solaris Unix is best. Support very-very huge database transactions (Open system). Combine these 3 servers and enjoy your working lifestyle.... munu2000@yahoo.com
