I just installed Novell Client 4.8 onto a Windows 2000 laptop. Before the install I had quick immediate access to another computer's file folder on a simple network with only 4 computers. Once I installed Client 4.8, on this same network it takes 10 to 14 seconds for a file folder to open on the network computer. When I uninstall Client 4.8 the delay goes away. I installed Client initially since my work uses Groupwise 4.0 for e-mail service and want access to e-mail on this laptop at the office. Don't use Client at home. I "check" off Novell Client when at home but this does not solve the problem, only uninstalling solves problem.

What type PC is the network computer that you are having such a long delay with?
When you install NetWare client, you run into this issue with multiple redirectors.
PC see's the remote PC via the remote PC broadcasting its name out on the network, but when you try to attach to it, first your PC looks for a Novell Server to find the resource in the tree and to see if you have rights to access that resource.
If that PC you are trying to connect to is an NT domain controller (primary or backup) then you can install NDS for NT onto your NT network and import all the domain information into the Novell Tree and be able to access it just like that!
Sounds silly but its a "feature" of the novell directory services.

Right click over the red NW Client at the bottom of your screen, go to Novell Client Properties, choose Advanced Settings, choose File Caching, and select OFF.
This will remedy your problem after you reboot.Avoid installing NDS for NT, as it will not be necessary.
Should be good to go.
Ciao.

There is a problem with Novell 4.8 NDPS. Check your properties of the 4.8 client. If you see Novell Distibuted Print Services listed.
Check the uninstall button.
This will bog down file transfers as well as opening folders if NDPS is active.
