Novell and Office - Do they mix?

Comment:

Some of our users while in Word/Excel 97 or 2000 will get locked out of their file that they have created in the past. It will either lock them out of the file and tell them that a temporary file was created, or it will tell them that the file is read-only and being used by another user. The bandage for the problem is to copy the contents to another file and save it. Go back in as administrator on the Novell 4.3 network and delete the original file. The file will not let the user delete or rename it, it must only be done on an administrator level.

Are there any suggestions as to a more permanent fix, so that we will not have to put up with this aggrevating problem.

What virus protection software do you have on the server? We had an identical problem when using Netshield.

We are using service release 2 on the Office 97. As far as virus protection we are using Mcafee only on the client side, but only on the ones with internet access.

On the network side we are Netware 4.2 with patch level 6. All clients have either Windows 95 or 98 with Netware client 3.0.2.0

Hello

What rights do the users have to the files and directorys and get rid of Mcaffee anyway it's a crap CHEAP product (In my opinion) get something like Inoculate IT and upgrade nwclient to 3.2 it's a lot more stable

All users have full complete rights to the directories they are using. However, we had another incident this morning the PC it happened on does not have McAfee loaded on it.

We started looking back at all the users that this problem is happening to and we are starting to see a pattern here. There is a possibility that it could be a common switch between the two departments.

I think the issue has to do with the way that windows & novell handle long file names. If you notice, you may be able to save files (using word) properly if you keep the names to the old 8.3 standard. Additionally, if the directory where you are saving the file is longer that 8 characters, you will have problems saving & accessing those files. I am not offering a fix as I have not been able to get anyone to give me some answers. I'm using NetWare Small Business 4.2 and Office 97 with the lates updates on a Win 98 client. However I am using an older client (2.1 I think) because of some issues with the Novell IPX/IP gateway software - at least that's what the last consultant we had in told us. I hope my comments stir up some answers or suggestions.

We're having similar problem. With win95 and novell 4.3. In office 97 apps as well as explorer.exe when we click on the file drop down to choose a network drive win95 hangs. It appears to hang while explorer.exe is refreshing the list of network drives. Anybody else having this problem? Thanks.

This message is probably too late and with little to offer. I would check to see what files are being created on the client machine. I think every time a new word doc is created it also creates another couple of copies. 1 in the users Temp or Windows\Temp directory. If you are also using the autorevor feature Tools|Options|File Locations it is also creating a copy in the specified directory. I regularly have the temp directories emptied. As for not being able to get the file this only happens for my users when 2 people are actually trying to access the same file or when the user crashes after creating the file and the temp file is still loaded in memory. A reboot fixes this. good luck
