I am trying to grant access to a user who I want to be able to just perform basic account administration (password management, directory access)on Netware 4.x servers. Is there any way to do this through NW Admin?

you know, a user with the "basic" ability to change passwords, potentially has access to all admin rights

SID, Thanks for the teaser. But how do you set this up?

Gary - What I would do is setup a Group Object and set it up with the rights to the areas you want the users of the group to be able to access. Once you create the Group Object go into the details of the group and select rights to files and directories. You will need to be the one to figure out what rights (RWCEMFS) in what Containers, OU's, files, etc..

If you are not up on how rights work I would suggest that you find a tutorial or guide on them. Not trying to be a smartass. It can be a little tricky, especially when it comes to IR's (Inherited Rights). One slipup and a user is in areas where he/she should not be allowed.

Back to the original question, I don't think netware has different levels of rights when it comes to admin functions like managing users. For example, you can't say, I want a user to be able to change passwords, but not create and delete users. Am I right?

You can download a utility call N4Pass. It works great for what you want. You can then set up a group of people or just one person in the group to unlock user accounts and reset passwords. Also, you can restrict the access to certian accounts i.e administrator.

Just do a search for N4Pass, I believe you can get it from Novell Web as well.
