i have a novell server 3.12 which has 20 98 workstations on it which all log on using client for netware networks. I have recently put an additional novell 5 server onto the network, now there seems to be a clash between the two servers because the 98 machines cannot log onto the novell 3.12 server, but if i unplug the novell 5 server from the network, then the machines are able to log on. What can i do to fix this? is there a command that i can put into the startup.ncf? to somehow disable the communication between the two servers?

when you have a 5 server, the clients will all try to log into it, you have to set the preferred server option on the client, and change the other setting, I forgot what they call it, but the default is NDS, BIND change it to BIND, NDS.

Also..
check ethernet type - if IPX on W98 is set to Auto detect ethernet type (802.2, 802.3, etc.) AND your NW3x is set for 802.3 (for example) and NW 5 is 802.2, W98 could be "locking in" on the first packet type it sees (802.2 perhaps). Cure: change NW3x to the same packet type as NW5, or add it as an additional type (or vice versa). Force W98 to use a specific packet type. Set preferred server option in client properties on W98 to look for NW3x box. Set "Reply To Get Nearest Server = Off" on the NW5 box. Make sure NW Client is NOT bound to TCP/IP stack on W98.

Listen to RF not to Dave. Dave does not have a clue. Any version of NetWare will co-exist with any other version of NetWare if you know what you're doing. RF is right with all the settings he's recommending. They should fix your problem.
