I have inherited the administration of our Novell network. I have very little Netware experience. I have been trying to use the backup exec that is installed to backup the server. It has not been run since they had a tech out to update the server to 5.1. BE tells me I don't have rights to the root. When I open Netware Admin. there is no root. There is no Admin. Any ideas what's going on? Things are running fine, but I sure would like a current backup! I thought maybe i could backup with sbackup...but it won't find the tape drive....

If you have admin rights then reinstall the BE and it will detect the scsi card and the tape drive. If doesn't then there will be specific error message which can be looked up at Veritas knowledgebase.

P.S. Never used BackupExec.

I believe back up exec is seeing the drive...but I do not have Admin rights to the "root. There is no "Admin" listed in the tree. There is no "Root" to the tree visible. I don't have the password for the Admin anyway but saw on the internet where you could go and change the password with a certain .nlm. I ran the setpwd.nlm and it allowed me to change the password for the user "supervisor". (It told me there was no "Admin". But I can not log in as supervisor, and there is no supervisor visible in the Netware Admin. It must be a user in the context that I can not see? How do I get in to view it?

Hi

Goto http://www.nmrc.org/files/netware/ and download the burglar.zip flle.

use this to create a user which has Admin rights. Login as this user and then re-create the Admin user at root level.

Cheers
Brian

Generally you do not create a Admin user object with the name of "Admin". That makes it to easy if someone was to get into your system. We use a user object that looks pretty much like any of the other 10K user objects. Then we bury him/her deep in the Tree. It's also nice to have another user object with just enough rights to reset the Admins password. And with this one we make it literally hidden in the Tree. It has saved my butt a couple of times in the last 17 years working with Netware.
