Mac file transfer problems

This is probably a trivial problem for those in the know, but we have ZERO Mac support at my campus, and I need help. I have recently hooked a Mac G4 running OS8.6 to a Novell network using netware v5.1 for mac. Suprisingly I got it on the network with no trouble, but simple file tranfers from Mac to various servers cause problems. The files that have problems are mainly large quicktime movies made on a Mac, but even some small gifs and jpegs balk. 1) File transfers may stop immediately giving a -50 Mac error code (parameter error) - shortening file names seems to cure this (are there name length restrictions?) 2) If I get past the above error, the transfer stops near the end giving a -57 error code. Suggestions Please!
Yes, try loading the module to enable MAC filenames on the Netware Server.

Thanks for the tip. That is probably the answer to the -50 error. However, file uploads still have a problem. Specifically: Downloads from the server to any Mac are fast eg maybe 30seconds for a10MB file. Uploads to the server of exactly the same file start off fine, and then slow and virtually stop. I have found the same behavior on three different macs (a G4,, an iMac and a 9600 all running different vintage operating systems) MacIntouch has a forum on Mac ethernet problems in some new Macs, but this seems to be a different issue.
The proper module to load on the server is the MAC.NAM not LONG.NAM. This should be done only by the network adminstrator, and only after determining that there is sufficient space on the volume(s) to create the new name space. Each name space LONG.NAM, MAC.NAM, et cetera requires more space for the new directory services.
In addition, depending upon the exact version of Netware and the client in question, a macfile.nlm may need to be running on the server. This does not consume much processor time, but not be a good idea on an over-stressed server.
