I'm trying to get printing to work on a Netware 4.11 network. When I start nptwin95.exe and try to add an NDS printer on a Windows 98 work station, I get this message:

Printer_X.APS is configured to use LPT1. Lpt1 is being used by Printer_4.APS.
Please select another printer that does not use LPT1 or remove Printer_4.APS and try again.

How do I get past the message and add a printer? Also, I've noticed that nwpopup is running on the work station. What is this and do I need it? As you can see, I'm new to Netware. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve Smith

This is a well documented problem with Win98 and Novell printers.
Use regedit to search for PORTNAME.
You will find that LPT1 is spelled with lowercase. Change this to all uppercase. (You may have to first re-name to something else first, otherwise regedit will not change the case.)

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately that was not the problem. LPT1 is spelled in uppercase. I've searched the registry and there is no mention of Printer_4.APS so I don't know why Netware is insisting that LPT1 is being used by Printer_4.APS. I removed Printer_4.APS and the associated queue but that didn't help. Any other suggestions?

go to the same key and change PORTNAME to PortName, case is important.

Hi i have some troubles with my printer.

I have an HP 610C deskjet.

when i am going to print appears a dialog box showing this message:

"wrong to write on LPT1, with printer (HP deskjet 610C series) deleting file to print"

i tried to print a test piece of paper but i failed.

i would like to know what is the problem with my printer.

The error: "Lpt1 is being used by printer_X.APS had been solved. I only needed to "clear" the printers in NPRINTER Manager (NPTWIN95.EXE). Now I can run NPTWIN95.exe and add a printer without getting the error. It then shows the printer is "running".

But, I still can't print to this printer from the Netware application. My print jobs go to another printer on another computer. I can print from Windows to this printer just fine and the printer is listed in the Windows Printer folder as a network printer. The Netware server shows that the printer is connected and "waiting". When I print from Windows the Netware sever shows that the printer is offline for a couple of seconds while the printer prints and then it goes back to waiting. When I print to this printer from the Netware application the print output goes to another printer on another computer. This also happens if I type "Dir > lpt1" at the command prompt.

I've checked the printer queue and printer settings and I can't see any reason this is happening. Any ideas?
