Hi there,
I need to find a way to replicate my current users on multiple servers. I have the same user structure and rights on all our servers but all the servers have different names (NDS) .Is there a way that I can create al my users in one shot ? I'm getting tired of doing all of the one by one. Maybe event transfer their rights to because the folder structure is also the same.
Thanks in advance and sorry if its a dumb question, but I’m no novell guy.

You you need to research "NDS" and "replication" for Novell. Here is a starting point...
http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/nds73/index.html
In concept, users log in to NDS rather than a particular server.NDS is a database and via the replication process, copies of NDS may be held on a variety of servers. (If a server drops out of service, users may still authenticate via a replica.)
A user need only be created once in NDS.
User rights to the directory structure on particular servers is retained in all replicas of NDS.
Individual users, groups of users or containers for users can be given the same rights to server directories in one hit.

Thanks Geoff,
I'll read trough that, but still have some questions.
I have a toatal of 180 novell netware servers on remote locations, retail stores, and each of them has its on DNS and its own tree and its own context.
Can i replicate one of those NDS and use it on other servers even if they all have different trees and contexts ?
Thax for the link :)

In other words what i need is a fast way to recreate my standard users and their rights if i have to start a server from scratch due to a bad backup.
Because i'm doeing one right now and i had to recreate al the users and thei password and then give them all the rights.
BTW Sorry for the errors, but my english is not perfect.. yet ;)

The answer to your question with regard to creating multiple users quickly is to use what is called a Template Object. As you know, there are many objects in the NDS database application that are used for specific purposes. The Template Object is used when many User Objects are created for a single context, or Container. The Template Object is created for the context first, then it is used to create all the User Objects for the container. You use the Template object when you have a level of network access that can be applied equally to all users, such as creating a home directory or trustee assignment(s) to specific application or data directories. I have some other questions regarding your NetWare infrastructure. Are all your network segments connected? Can you see all the NetWare servers from a single location? You say you have 180 servers in discrete locations, each with its own tree. If all of the servers can be connected to the Internet via routers, are you aware that you can create just ONE tree and have all 180 servers in their own contexts be a part of the single tree? Evidently not but this is precisely how NDS is meant to be deployed. There is no reason at all for you to have 180 separate trees in this network. From my perspective as a Novell guy, this is crazy. You should create one tree that reflects your entire company, then create individual Organization containers for each remote location, which I assume you already have created, and then as many Organizational Unit containers necessary for each remote location, which you may also have already done. Then you begin the process of merging all the separate trees into the single tree. This is a complicated process but certainly not impossible. Furthermore, this is how NetWare is meant to be used and you will reap the benefits if you do this, such as the ability to remotely manage all your separate locations from one central point. This is a project I'd love to get involved in, I envy the potential you have to leverage the software even if you aren't a Novell guy, as you say. Contact me if you want more information.
