To direct connect two computers with an ethernet cable, you need a crossover cable.

1-----3
2-----6
3-----1
6-----2

Two standard ethernet cables connect via a hub. The hub does the crossover

-cable- HUB -cable-
1-----1 --- 3-----3
2-----2 --- 6-----6
3-----3 --- 1-----1
6-----6 --- 2-----2
