Is it possible to run groupwise 5.2 WITH an address book, on XP? I get this prompt for an exchange server, which we do not currently have. This is on a novell 4.11 server base.

Thank you for helping me!

The answer is yes. That is the way it should be when running a GW Client against a GW system. What I am not sure about is running GW Client 5.2.x on an XP box. It should work if you have the right Windoze Messaging installed. I have only ran the GW Client 5.5.x on XP. It would only take about ten minutes to find out. I will explain it below if you want to try it.

The problem you have got is that under your MAIL services you probably do not have the GW Novell Message Store, Novell Personal Address Book, Novell GroupWise Address Book running as a service. I am not sure where to look under XP but I can tell you where under 2K and you should be able to translate it to where it's @ in XP.

In 2K it would be under Start\Settings\Control Panel\Mail\Services. If those Books I listed above are not running as a service click on ADD and see if they appear in a drop down menu to be selected. If they are not then you would be better off to just reinstall the GW Client. If they are in the drop down add them in and remove anything related to Outlook and Exchange. The only services that should be running are the three I listed above.

To reinstall I have found that on 2K and XP it is best to run a GW utility that goes in and cleans the GW Client off before you reinstall it. The name of the utility is called GWCA55US.exe. I have listed the URL below where you can download it. It says that it is for 95/98/2K/NT, but we have used it on an XP.

There is one other thing that you should do before reinstalling the GW Client. And that is to install Windows Messaging. Here is the order that we have used to insure a good install of the GW Client on 2K/XP boxes.

1. Run Cleaning Agent
2. Install Windows Messaging
3. Install GW Client

It sounds like a lot but it only takes about 5 minutes tops for the whole process. As one last thing to check for. And that would be back under the place I told you to check for the GW Address Book. Remove any reference to M$ Outlook or Exchange Address Books or severs or anything M$ running as a service under MAIL.

I hope I haven't totally confused you, but installing the GW Client is not as easy as it use to be on Win 98. This is the reason we are going to pure WebAccess, no more Client issues.
