Underdog,

I have installed Groupwise 5.0 on my Novell 4.11 Server. Now a couple of quick questions.

I need to update it to the latest SP.. All I can find on Novell's sites are updates for 5.1 and 5.2, etc...

Also, Groupwise 5.0 Client does not work properly under XP... Can I update to a different client?

I appreciate your insight!

Cheers! :)

Good Day Medic,
I doubt if you will be able to find any SP's for GW 5.0 or 5.1. GW 5.1 was in essence a SP/version upgrade to 5.0. Likewise GW 5.2 was a SP/version upgrade to GW 5.1. If there is any SP's for these two versions they are probably so far down in the basement @ Novell, that you would probably need dynamite to uncover them.

I really don't believe your going to be happy with GW 5.0, 5.1 on an XP box. Even if you get it to run halfway right, or @ all. My experience with GW has been with versions 4.x and GW 5.2.6 on up. GW 5.2 runs very well on Windoze 95/98 boxes, and I am sure that holds true for GW 5.0 and 5.1. We have to remember that @ the time of these versions of GroupWise, these were the only two M$ OS's around. And that is the OS architecture that the GW 5.0 - 5.2 Client was written around. My honest opinion is that you should upgrade to at least GroupWise 5.5 if you are going to stay with M$ XP workstations.

We upgraded from GW version 5.2 to 5.5 a little over a year ago. While we were on version 5.2.6 we ran the GW Client on Windoze 98 boxes. And it was just rock solid!! We then upgraded to GW 5.5 and this was about the time we were also upgrading our workstation OS to 2K with some XP machines sprinkled throughout the Network. Right now we run a mix of the GW Clients 5.2 and 5.5 against the GroupWise 5.5 Domain & P.O.'s.

To sum this all up I would say this:

1. You might or might not be able to run a later version of the GW 5 Client against your GroupWise 5.0 Domain, I would lean more towards probably not. Generally the rule is that you can NOT run a later version of a GW Client (this is only for versions 5.x) against an older GW Domain, but you can run an older version of the client against a newer version of a GW 5 Domain. You just do not get the features that the newer client would provide. In other words the GroupWise Clients are for the most part Forward compatible. The only exception to this that I know of is with the GW Client version 5.5EP, it will run against a 5.5 Domain, in this case it is Backwards compatible. But I have not tested any other versions of 5.x for this same backwards compatibility.

2. Like I stated earlier, I would suggest that you upgrade if at all possible to at least
GroupWise 5.5. Novell has stopped support on all versions below version 5.5EP.
And if they follow tradition, the SP's will get harder to find on their site. Either the
GW Clients 5.2, 5.5, 5.5EP will work on your XP boxes.

I will do a little bit more research on this for my own knowledge. If I find anything that covers your issue with 5.0 and Win XP I will definetely let you know. Maybe somebody else out there has ran into this, or has more information on your situation and will post. Like I said I jumped from GroupWise version 4.x to 5.2.6. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. I would be more than happy to do so.
