Imagine this please: A folder ABC, RWCEMF permissions to group DEAF.
Multiples files (*.doc) inside ABC with owner as 'Admin'.I am a normal user belonging to group DEAF and I can create modify erase etc. Any file under ABC folder as long as I am the owner of that file. The moment I try to modify any .doc file of whom I am NOT the owner, I am not able to save this file and get an error message: "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error." I have no problems in modifying or saving the files which have *.txt extensions even when I am not their 'owner'.
My aim: To make this folder/files shareable amongst users of group 'DEAF'
where they can modify/update the .doc files but NOT be able to delete them. I don't want to use the option of asking them to first download the file locally. modify and them upload back on the network. I want the modify operation to be done 'on the fly', which will disable other user from opening the same while while someone is in the process of editing it.My Office 2000 is SP3 patched and Client is 4.83SP1 on Win2K. You have one filter upon this file that prevent you to save the file or you donīt have right to make *.doc changes...see whit network administrator.

I suspect you had removed the delete write when you got the message. One of the issues with Word is that it wants to create the temp file in the exact same location as the opened file. So instead of using the local temp variable it parks the temp file on the server. I have gotten the exact same error when delete rights and the ability of Word to delete the temp file was restricted. Don't know of a way around this. As far as the owner and .doc bit I don't know. Either someone has messes with the folder options or the file options or you have a corrupt folder. Run dsrepair to clear up folder corruption.

Thanks for you comments. It was hard to find my way around on this one. First, under advanced Setting Tab of Novell client, I had to turn Off File caching and Turn ON File commit. Then Give all the RWCEF Rights to users on the folder DEAF.
Pros: Users can now modify and save the file.
Cons: If they are being lousy, they can also Delete the original file due to erase Right. An alternative is to let them save the file as a new filename by making the parent file as 'Read Only' but this is not what they want.
Guess, I might have to live with this solution for now.
