I need to know if anyone else has had problems running Dos programs on a Novell 5.1 network? What I am finding with some database files is that when I run it on the Novell 5.1 Network I end up with holes punched in the records (you know big blank areas in the dbf file). If I move this program down to my c drive of the computer and run it, all is well. Has anyone else found this to be a problem or know if Novell 5.1 had glitches in when running dos programs?

Dear Beth

I'm not at my work right now but in the properties of Client32 try:

True comit = on
There is also another couple of setting which escapes me just now but look for.

Disk Writes = 0
Anything to do with Cache settings make sure it states "now"

Netware usually holds data in memory until it can write to the server. This is a big mistake with Databases as data should be written to disk instantly.

Hope this helps
Brian

The setting you want is ...
Client 32 properties
advanced tab
cache writes =off

We have had 1st hand experience of cache writes set to the default =on causing data corruption in older application db files.

Sub-block allocation can, when it misbehaves, can cause similar symptoms.

Recommendations for database files on a network drive via mapped drives:

- Turn off opportunistics locks on any Windows client (turning off client side caching with NetWare client 32 software does that).
- Make certaing that Sub-block allocation is not in effect for any of the volumes where the database files reside.
